Another showcase. "John Dalton (1766-1844) was born near Cockermouth in Cumberland. Although he came from a poor Quaker family, he became one of the leading scientists of the day. Teaching provided his income. Dalton came to Manchester in 1793 to teach Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at the New College, a Dissenter's Academy. He contributed to the cultural life of the town through the Literary and Philosophical Society, of which he was President from 1817 to his death."
